With Andrew Tortoishell retiring Herbert Smith Freehills appoints Justin D’Agostino as its new managing partner for Greater China.
Hong Kong arbitration partner Justin D’Agostino is to become Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) new managing partner for Greater China on the 1st May2013 and Andrew Tortoishell will be retiring on the 30th June 2013.
D’Agostino, currently head of the firm’s arbitration practice in Greater China, will continue to lead the international arbitration practice across Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. He joined Herbert Smith as a trainee in 1998 and was admitted as a solicitor in England and Wales in 2000 before becoming a solicitor advocate in 2005. He was made up in 2007 and moved from London to Hong Kong in 2009. He was admitted as a solicitor in Hong Kong in 2010.
Retiring partner Tortoishell joined Herbert Smith’s London office in 1984, moved to Hong Kong in 1990 and became a partner in 1994. He has held a range of offices during his 22 years in Hong Kong including head of corporate, managing partner of the Hong Kong office and managing partner for Greater China.
HSF Asia managing partner Mark Johnson said in a statement: “Over the course of more than a quarter of a century, Andrew has made an outstanding contribution to the firm both as a highly respected corporate lawyer and as a senior manager and leader. We are sad to see Andrew go and wish him every success and good fortune for the future.”

The firm currently has 25 partners in Greater China.
