Shakespeares is in talks with Leicester firm Marrons regarding a merger, which will see the firm’s sixth acquisition since 2010. The merger, which is anticipated to go live in September, would lead to the addition of lawyers and town planners, which would strengthen Shakespeares’ planning practice.
Marrons is currently home to 32 staff including 12 planning lawyers, one consultant, and eight qualified town planners, led by principles John Edmond and Morag Thomson.
Shakespeares CEO Paul Wilson said the merger would diversify the firm’s exisiting planning group: “Marrons’ expertise perfectly complements our existing teams and this move is evidence of our wish to invest in and offer the full range of services to developers.”
The firms are in the final stage of due dilligence and expect to be able to announce the structure of the planning practice on the 1 September.
This merger will make Shakepeares one of the largest firms in the Midlands.
Its latest, and largest, merger was with Harvey Ingram in July 2012 which made the firm the second largest in the region behind Wragg & Co and took its combined turnover to £48.7m in 2011/12.
In June 2010 legacy Shakespeare Putsman merged with Midlands rival Needham & James. Later the same year the firm acquired Nottingham-based Berryma. It followed this in October that year with the acquisition of two-partner firm Gorrara Haden, followed shortly afterwards by the acquisition of Solihull-based Wood Glaister.
