Debevoise & Plimpton LLP today announced that Richard Lawton is joining the firm’s London office as an international counsel. Mr Lawton will join from Herbert Smith Freehills, where he was a senior associate in the firm’s litigation team.
Mr Lawton specializes in complex litigation and has wide-ranging experience across a full spectrum of industries and jurisdictions. Mr Lawton regularly works on multi-billion-pound litigation, often cross-border in nature. His experience includes representing multinational corporates in large-scale corporate disputes, representing clients involved in shareholder/joint venture disputes, and acting on litigation and investigations arising out of a number of high-profile corporate collapses. He has acted for and against auditors, other professional advisers, directors, affiliate companies and financial institutions involved in such collapses.
Mr Lawton joins Debevoise following a period of considerable growth in the firm’s London litigation practice. 2012 saw nine new associates hired to the team, as well as the announcement that leading litigator Kevin Lloyd will join the firm as a partner in the course of 2013, also from Herbert Smith Freehills. The team, led by former Attorney General Lord Goldsmith QC, acts for an international client base, including leading multinationals, international organizations, sovereigns and non-governmental organizations.
Lord Goldsmith QC, Chair of European and Asian Litigation, said: “Our team has been at the forefront of some of the world’s most significant disputes in recent years. The leading international arbitration, white collar and English law litigation practices we have in London have played a huge role in that success. It’s a position we’re proud of, and one which Richard’s arrival will go a long way to cementing. He’s an incredibly talented litigator who has enjoyed considerable success. I’m looking forward to welcoming him into the team.”
Richard Lawton said: “The growth of Debevoise as a litigation force in London in recent years has been clear to see. The talent they have in the office and the high profile nature of the cases they’re constantly advising on make for an incredibly powerful proposition. It’s an exciting time to join the team, and I’m eager to play my part in its continued success.”
Mr Lawton started his career at Herbert Smith in 2003 and has served there since then. He is a Solicitor Advocate of The Senior Courts of England and Wales. Mr Lawton holds an MA in Law from the University of Cambridge.
