Cees T. Dekker started in private practice in 1989. In 1998 he joined the Netherlands Competition Authority (NCA)and headed the Legal Department. In that quality he took part in the Advisory Committee on Restrictive Practices and Monopolies of the European Commission. In 2004 he has joined Nysingh, after having worked with Loyens & Loeff in Rotterdam.
In the field of competition law he has advised and represented multinational and national companies and trade associations in such diverse economic sectors as the airlines business, agro and fishery products, bicycle industries, chemical products, cleaning services, construction industries, harbour business, information services, as well as road transport business. He has acted in a great many cases before the NCA and European Commission, as well as the European Court of First Instance. In 2002 and 2003 he advised the Slovakian Competition Authority on procedural aspects with regard to Slovakia’s accession to the European Union.
In Chambers Global Guide he was ranked at rank 2 for EU and National Competition Law.
He also advises companies as well as governmental organizations in the field of European State Aid Law.
With regard to other areas of European law, he focuses on import barriers. He was responsible for the preliminary reference (the first one by way of accelerated procedure) in the Jippes case on the prohibition of vaccination with regard to food-and-mouth disease and also advised, inter alia, on the imports of beef products from the US in the European Union and the largest EU shrimp supplier on EU import bans on shrimps from India.
Cees Dekker was lecturer in European and competition law at the universities of Groningen and Amsterdam. He has a great many publications to his credit on European and competition law and is much in demand as speaker on legal conferences on competition law. In 2002 he published “Nederlands Mededingingsprocesrecht” (“Dutch competition law procedures”), which is regarded as the standard on this subject in the Netherlands. He is also one of the two lawyers in charge of the highly regarded postdoctoral course in European and National Competition Law of the Grotius Academy, in which course he also lectures and takes exams.
