John is a partner at Bingham Greenebaum Doll LLP and serves as Leader of the firm’s Intellectual Property Group. He focuses his practice on prosecution and licensing of patent applications in a wide variety of mechanical, software, and electrical fields. He has helped clients protect inventions pertaining to various types of engines (including jet, rocket and diesel), nanotechnology, medical devices, sensors, manufacturing, software applications, signal processing and dynamics, vehicles, food packaging, fluid manipulation, and non-lethal weapons. John has been named an IP Star by Managing IP.

John’s professional career spans 40 years. For the first 20 years, he was a practicing engineer. While an engineer, he received a law degree and became a licensed attorney. John joined an IP boutique, obtained registration before the USPTO, and practiced patent law. While at this IP boutique, he became a partner and Chairman of the firm’s Patent Group. For the last 10 years, John has been a partner and Leader of the Bingham Greenebaum Doll IP Group.

John obtained over 20 years of engineering experience, primarily in aerospace, with Hughes Aircraft Company, Missile Systems Group; General Motors, Allison Division, Advanced Military Engines; Chrysler Corporation, and Purdue University, as a researcher, analyst, design engineer, systems engineer, supervisor and chief project engineer. His technical experience includes analysis, testing, design and engineering management of missile guidance units, computer control systems for aircraft and automotive engines, jet engine hot sections and automatic transmissions. He has applied his skills to the AMRAAM air-to-missile, the YF-23 Stealth fighter, the V-22 Osprey and the E-2C Hawkeye programs. He performed graduate research in computer modelling and testing of internal combustion engines, studied vehicle dynamics and taught classes in instrumentation at Purdue University.
