Mario Riccomagno is co-founder and senior partner of MR International Lawyers a firm that, as by its name, has a strong orientation towards international practice. This is due to two reasons: because many instructions they accept are coming from foreign lawyers and clients and because the core of the activity is based on or connected with transport which is per se international.

The firm frequently provides advocacy assistance on the Italian, European and international aspects of multinational and multi-jurisdictional disputes. The most of the Italian clients are top ranked insurance companies. The arbitration practice (domestic and international) is dealt exclusively by Mario Riccomagno. The firm has stable roots in Genoa and Milan where it has offices and has a network of longlasting correspondents in Italy and abroad.

The expertise of Mr. Mario Riccomagno covers the area of international transactions with special focus on shipping law, marine insurance, law of transports, sales of goods, representation agreements. In the field of litigation he receives appointments for clients having international and multi-jurisdictional disputes both before courts and arbitration tribunals. Frequently Mr. Riccomagno also sits as a sole or panel arbitrator.

No names of clients can be done for confidentiality purposes. They are normally shipowners, road carriers, logistics operators, charterers, insurers, traders, radio/satellite services providers, class societies, etc.

Mr. Riccomagno became a graduate as J.D. in 1972 at the Catholic University in Milan. Then he obtained two diplomas in English Law at the City of London Polytechnic and in Comparative Law at the Columbia University – New York.

After the admission at the Italian Bar in 1974 he started his career in Milan with Pavia e Ansaldo and then with Ardito Law Firm. In the same years he was Research Fellow at the Department of Private International Law at the State University of Milan.

In 1983 he founded Riccomagno Law Firm in Genoa. On those years he started his commitments with the International Bar Association that culminated with his appointment as Council Member of the Section on Business Law (office that lasted from 1992 to 1996).

Under the academic profile Mr. Riccomagno has been Professor appointed in 2004 by the Faculty of Law of the University of Genoa and holder of a course of lectures on Contracts of Navigation. He lectured also on international contracts, law of transports, arbitration and ADR at several training courses and Master’s Programmes organized by the Universities of Milan and Genoa as well as by his Bar Council of Genoa and by the Academy of Law, Mediation and Arbitration.

Mr. Riccomagno also receives appointments as arbitrator in domestic and international (ICC) disputes.

He is presently accredited arbitrator with the China Maritime Arbitration Commission and with the Maritime Arbitration Court of Genoa. In 2012 the Italian Ministry of Justice appointed him as accredited mediator.

In October 2016 Riccomagno Law Firm merged with IT Insurance & Transport Consulting s.a.s., another law firm of Genoa specialized in Law of Transports and Insurance. The name of the new firm is MR International Lawyers.

Mr. Riccomagno is co-author of the Code of International Conventions (Milan 1977) and of the book on Liability of Lawyers and Insurance (London 1995), editor of the book on Multimodal Transport in the Today Legal Reality (Turin 1996), author of the Italian chapter of “Shipbuilding” edited by Getting the Deal Through (2013-2015) and co-author of the book “Arbitration and Enterprises – 10 years of judgments of the Court of Appeal of Genoa” (Genoa 2016). Mr. Riccomagno has also written almost fifty articles on legal issues that have been published in various Italian and foreign law magazines and journals. Mr. Riccomagno is member of the Editorial Staff of Il Diritto Marittimo, European Transport Law and Il Foro Padano.

For more 40 years Mr. Riccomagno has acted (and continues to act) as speaker or panel chairman at law conferences, seminars, workshops and symposia in Italy and – more frequently – abroad. Generally speaking he has attended almost eighty congressual events dealing with the legal issues on which his professional concentration is based.

Mr. Riccomagno is presently Treasurer of the Italian Maritime Law Association (Genoa), Council Member of the Italian Arbitration Association (Rome), member of the Working Group “Arbitration” of the Comité Maritime International (Antwerp), Director of the European Maritime Law Organization (London), individual member of the IBA, member of the Governing Council of the International Resolution Institute (Abuja), Associate to Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (London) and Supporting Member of the London Maritime Arbitration Association.

The pro bono associations where Mr. Riccomagno is member is the Rotary Club of Genoa and the Propeller Club – Port of Genoa.

Mr. Riccomagno is married with his charming Franca and they have two sons. He loves culture in general and tries to increase his knowledge for all the forms of art (literature, painting and theatre). He likes travelling and practising sports (he used to practice mountaineering and running; now he is a trekker).
