Announcement - New member of The Lawyer Network in England

We are delighted to announce that Nigel Tait of 'Carter-Ruck' has joined The Lawyer Network. Nigel has joined the network as our exclusive Commercial Litigation Law member in England.

Nigel is the Managing Partner of Carter-Ruck as well as Head of the firm’s Defamation and Media Law department. Nigel’s principal areas of expertise are three-fold.


(1) Media litigation and reputation management

Nigel has obtained numerous apologies for clients (including on the front page and on television and radio), numerous settlements involving damages in six figures, and many substantial awards at trial (including the highest ever award to a company) both by Jury and Judge alone.


Nigel has obtained numerous injunctions (including in PJS v News Group Newspaper which went to the Supreme Court, which upheld the injunction) for clients restraining infringement of their privacy by the press or former associates and has prevented the publication of many articles about clients, often by means of a phone call or letter. Nigel has also acted for many clients who were to be featured on Panorama, Dispatches and other TV documentary/news programmes securing either their complete removal from the programme or the removal of the defamatory allegations.


Nigel has worked on four Law Society Committees looking into reforms to libel practice, privacy law and civil procedure. He has spoken on three occasions at the Oxford Union Debating Society on libel and privacy and chairs the annual White Paper defamation and privacy conference.

(2) Commercial litigation

Nigel has acted in numerous actions for breach of contract, professional negligence, financial mis-selling, breach of trust and breach of fiduciary duty winning tens of millions of pounds for clients in such cases over the last few years.


Nigel has successfully sued banks, pension advisers, and financial advisers in many cases where the clients required a safe or cautious investment but lost money. A number of such cases have been conducted on a conditional (“no win, no fee”) basis supplemented with After the Event Insurance to cover disbursements and the possibility of an adverse costs order.


Nigel has also obtained injunctions for clients against former employees acting in breach of restrictive covenants or who have used confidential information taken from former employers in setting up their own businesses or working for competitors.


(3) Employment disputes

Nigel regularly acts for journalists who find themselves in employment disputes and has advised employees and self-employed contractors from almost all national newspapers.
